« on: Mar 15, 2013, 08:18:49 AM »
So I have a Toyota 4Runner that has 4.88 (white pinion gears) i want to put locker in it... which way should i go?? Yukon Spool Locker OR should i look into the Yukon Grizzly Automatic Locker? Help please!! I just dont want ARB Lockers.... Rear locker only too, i have no use for being locked in the front. Keep in mind that its an IFS... Thanks!!

I set up a 4runner with the 4.88s for my wife and we used a detroit locker.  It was great.  With the stock 4.88s you have a slightly different carrier than the other gear ratios so your locker options become more limited.  I think you can still get the detroit though.

That being said we run either welded rears or full spools on everything in the rear now on road or off.

As far as I know the carrier is the same, it's the third member casting that's different. The casting moves the pinion over a little and the ring gear is a little thinner to make up for this distance at the carrier. So you should be able to just use a regular 8" V6-third Grizzly auto locker or spool. There is only one ring & pinion you can use in this casting, and it's the factory 4.88 only. If I'm wrong about this someone, please correct me.

Some people like the Aussie lunchbox, or the Yukon Spartan. Detroit's are great, which I have in my 4runner (factory 4.88 V6 third) but I hear the Grizzly is getting more popular. I have a Grizzly to install in my other truck and am interested to see how it compares. I hear my Detroit clicking at low speeds sometimes but for the most part it's flawless.

If you daily drive it a lot, I would go auto locker like Grizzly or Detroit. I have never used a spool so I don't know, it depends on how you are going to use the truck, but being IFS that might already answer the question.

Spool lockers, if I not mistaken, are not recommended for driven on streets. They are full time lockers, and never disengage, you will have hard time turning. Grizzly Lockers works the same as Detroit lockers, but are little cheaper. I'm running Detroit Lockers in rear axle on my 91 pickup, and I love it. :twocents:

Your better with a lunchbox, or a complete locker.  Spools are for offroad use strictly.  All others have some give to them, hence the ratcheting sounds.  Spools will make your tires wear out twice as fast.
