Transmission help...
« on: Feb 10, 2013, 02:27:42 PM »
I just picked up an 80 Toyota longbed 4x4 :D It has a 20R (verified by the numbers on the motor) and to my surprise and pleasure, it has a 5 speed... But to the best of my knowledge, the L43 (a 4-speed) is the only tranny offered with the 20R. How can I tell what tranny I have?

Get under there and look at it.  Some of the features to look for is it a top shift tcase, or forward shift?  Does the tranny shifter base have 4 bolts or 6 bolts holding it down?   Compare it to these pictures for reference.  http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmission/rebuilt-complete   And if you can't get it ID'd, then get some clear and sharp pictures and the guys can help you ID it.

So after a few hours of research and picture comparison, I have discovered that it has either a G52 or G54 Transmission... Without takin it off to look at the input bearings, how can I tell them apart? Are they good transmissions?

They work good, but it just depends on what your plans are for it.  W56 would be alot stronger, but the R151F is the best behind a 4 cyl.  :yesnod:
