Both knuckes very warm to touch
« on: Mar 02, 2005, 06:44:27 PM »
I recently did a knuckle rebuild on my toy and after about a 30 minute drive at 55 mph the front hubs are warm to the touch, one of them nearly too hot to touch for long. Should I back off the bearing retianer nut??? Im assuming if it is to tight this will happen.

thanks in advance

Every single time i've repacked the front bearings, the first trip out the hubs were hot to the touch.  I think the grease is just finding its happy place and the bearing is wearing to the race.  It will go away if you did it right.

Dude if it's warm enough to the touch..The grease has found it's happy place..When I repacked my 85 runner I went to the vented disc. Why is that important to note. My hubs where also warm to the touch.I thought it was the tight clearance with the disc and shoes. So I went back into the hub nut, losened it while spinning the hub I tightened the nut till just snug then a quarter turn and bent the washer tab...No problems....Still warm  :dunno:

For shits and grins did you know on the DC-9 & MD - 80 aircraft the nose tire retaining nut is torqued to 25 foot lbs..You can almost tighten it with your hand. I work for Continental Airlines.

I believe that! Im a crew chief on f-16's and f-15's and our retaining nut has a pre-laod of 190-200 inch lbs, and a final torque of 25- 100in lbs! And thats for the main landing gear!

Thanks for the info on your rebuild lowgeared and esthere, I already did just like you guys did and re-loaded the bearing just to be sure. My service manual says load bearing 22ft lbs then back off and tighten as much as possible BY HAND. I have never bothered to check the hub temp before since this is my first time servicing the knuckle.

i never tighten my hub nuts more than a very firm hand tight,  and by the way my truck has 374000 miles to date,   why  ??  i actually was taught this by an old wise man, aka my dad,  when serviceing rear axle bearings on large trucks,  run the nut down with a ratchet, spin tire,  back off and hand tighten
