the v6 carrier (detroit locker) uses larger side bearings then the 4 cyl.  the pinion bearing is also larger. 4cyl gears will work in the v6 third but the v6 gear is stronger due to more tooth contact. the only interchangeable parts are 4 cyl gears to v6 third member and pinion yokes (driveline flange).

A v6 carrier will fit in a 4cyl housing with the correct bearings.  the dimensions of the v6 bearings are (aprox):  50mm id x 83mm od.  the dimensions of the 4cyl bearing is 45mm x 79-80 ish.  there is a bearing that will allow a 55mm id and 79-80ish od (I think marlin even sells it as a kit).  I have found a bearing that will allow a 4 cyl carrier in a v6 housing (produced by sks bearings) but haven't found anyone able to actually supply it so I cannot verify if it will work.
