First break
« on: Jul 22, 2002, 01:21:03 PM »
:help:

Yesterday I kicked my 4" cast iron blocks out, sheared all 4 u bolts and sheared the pin in my third member OUCH! What can I do to improve my truck so that won't happen again?  This is the first real break I've done to my 4Runner. I have the parts to fix it but I want to toughen it up. any advice is very appreciated

Loose those da_n blocks!

Call Charles at Alcan Spring and get yourself some sweet lift springs... you won't regret it.

That will solve a lot of your problem.

What gap are you running.... (gap between the accelerator and the floor board)?

take care...

If you're too cheap to get real springs, you can get junkyard springs (Chevy 1/2 tons, F150's, Waggy's, etc), or use a combo of longer shackle, add-a-leaf, or shorter block with current springs.

Or, you could just get a wrap bar!
The common prob with blocks is axle wrap, which is probably what caused your ubolts to break.  A wrap bar will stop axle wrap, which won't break ubolts.

All depends on how much money/time you want to spend and how good of a suspension you want.

It sounds like you did a number on the rear axle with that 4"block.  Be happy you didn't eat a R&P...
I have 4" Alcans on my 4Runner along with a Marlin Ultimate and 5.29's.  I haven't busted any u-bolts but I did bend my rear axle housing under the right spring pad.  The front of the pad had dented the housing in and the weld on the rear edge of the pad  had cracked allowing the spring pad to rotate ever so slightly forward.  Having a 223:1 crawl ratio helped this I'm sure.  I beefed up the area around the axle pads on my new housing so maybe I've taken care of that problem.
