Tires size on 1982 p/u are 33"s big enough
« on: May 09, 2012, 09:34:56 PM »
I recently picked up a 1982 p/u long bed 4x4 with a 3" lift I will probably drive 80% highway 20% off road will 33" tires be enough I will be adding a crawler box shortly and just don't want to short sell myself but realize there will be a lot of highway miles

Depends if you're planning on regearing the axles or not. You could fit 35s though. Last I checked the price difference was minimal between a 33 and 35

Figure that there will be a loss of power even at 33's with stock gearing you'll not be using 5th much anymore or you will be shifting all the time. Also 5th is the weak link if your trans is the original. If you upgrade to a crawler box also consider moving up to a trans with a stronger 5th gear like 85 and up.

You will hate 33's unless you replace diff gears. I went with 4.88 gears and 35's and the speedometer is close. My 5th gear is for flat or down hill only.

I think 33s on stock or near stock height looks awesome on a first gen. TURBO ran 33s on his '83 with a rear locker and our 4.70s in his lone t/case and did all of Dusy-Ershim. I like this route as it's more driver skill rather than some beast of a rig that effortlessly gets through trails. I'd love to build another truck & limit it's tire size to 33".

if the truck is your dd id go 4.88 gears and 33's. if a year or 2 from now the trucks going to become a dedicated wheeler id suggest 5.29's and 35's. i have 2 toyotas set up like this.  my dd has the 4.88's and 33's it gets better mpg and has more high end power. if your not going to re gear your axles run 31's. i dont care what anyone says without gears pulling anything bigger than a 31 on a 22r/re daily driver sux! and its hard on your transmission. thats my opinion. you can go a long ways on some 33" tsl's

I've rocked 33's for the past couple months on my '83 with stock 4:10's and hasn't bothered me much, I just don't use 5th, average speed on the highway is 65 at about 3k in 4th, and around town does fine and 17mpg combined.
