R154 Transmission Questions (AX15 Input Shaft?)
« on: Jan 13, 2012, 09:13:09 PM »
Hi all, I'm working on a project to mate a Toyota Supra R154 transmission to a Dodge Neon SRT-4 motor using a 2.4L Jeep Liberty bellhousing. Everything bolts up, but the input shaft does not reach the pilot bearing in the block. I can probably mill the bellhousing to make this work, but I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas. It's a little less than .25" different.

I looked into swapping an AX15 input shaft onto the R154, since they are very similar; however, from what I understand, the AX15 is a 29 tooth gear and the R154 is a 34. I also know some of the Supra guys have been swapping over the an Aisin AR5 from a GMC Colorado, no one seems to have compared input shafts to see if the AR5 shaft will work in an R154 though.

I have heard rumors about a 4WD R154 with a longer input shaft, but I have not seen anything to support this.

If anyone knows of a longer input shaft that will fit on an R154, or has any other suggestions on how to make this work, I'm all ears. It's a small difference, but I'd like to avoid milling the bellhousing.

Thanks,

Chris

Man if it's only 1/4" I'd say milling the bell housing is your best bet.

R154 is 2wd supra tranny, R151 is the 4wd truck version.  I'd say mill it

Machine an extension piece for the input shaft that slips over the existing shaft nipple, and then slips into the pilot bearing.

Thanks for the input guys.

emsvitil -- does that put any added strain on the input shaft?
