Dana 44 SAS questions

So ive been doing alot of research on solid axle swaps into tacomas. It looks to me that the most inexpensive axle i could buy would be a dana 44 out of a wagoneer. Are there any big problems with the dana 44 out of a  waggy, can it be geared he same as a toyota 8in axle, is there any issue with the width of the 44?

Im looking into what it would take to do this on my 96' tacoma because my truck is in need of front end work (ball joints, upper and lower, TRE's, and resealing the steering gear) and i know i have to spend a good chunk of money already and im just looking at how much more it would be to put in a solid axle. I want a solid axle for the added reliablity, i have taken my truck on some gnarley roads that i probably shouldnt have been on with it being completly stock. Help me justify doing this.

nothing wrong with a waggy d44 make sure it has a driverside diff and the common gear for both the waggy d44 and yota axle is 488s

are those the only common gears? As far as the waggy d44 goes, would a 3 link setup work or just leafs? Is a 3 link setup something that i could drive every day?

not trying to be mean but if your asking if a 3link can be driven everyday you probably don't need one and you don't have the knowledge of getting the geometry right to make it handle well on the road. there is a lot of info about tacoma/3rd gen 4runner sas with d44 waggy just start reading every thread on it. after a couple weeks you'll have a better idea of what you'll have to do.

yep the 488s are the common gears that match or you can run 538s in the d44 and 529s in the yota axle and those work well together

what are the other options for front axles? i know that people have used:

dana 44 out of wagoneers
old toyota front axles then switch there transfer case to right hand drop
trail gear (i think its called the rock assult)
all pro d60 hybrid

for axles on a taco you can run a 85 yota and switch the tcase to passengerside, a d44, ford 60, diamond,ruffstuff,rock assault, a 14bolt and make it a front axle,chevy 60, dynatrac,rockjock,allpro toyota/60  im sure im missing one or two but it comes down to how much you want to spend on a axle

i was sifting through some threads on ttora and was reading that going with an early toyota front axle could be problematic on a tacoma because it was too narrow so you ended up using wheel spacers and wheels with an odd offset. As far as the other axles what would say is the most inexpensive on average?

average is a dana 44 gears are 200 and a locker is 500-1200 pending on which one you want to run
