Can't find any info on anyone doing a swap like this.  I would like to get a few more gallons out of the old gal and I am curious if I can pull the 13 gallon tank and put in the long bed 16 gallon tank without doing too much cutting and fabbing?
anyone know??   :)
thanks

i wouldn't think so because it'd be longer, so you'd have to move the crossmember for the tank back and might run into issues with the e-brake cable and the brake valve, probably be a lot of fabbing for a factory tank...

I was going to do the same thing and it wont fit in the stock location.  For me I would have to cut the rear tank hanger and move it back which would have put it on the rear cross bar.  I did measure and I could have moved both mounts backwards to get it to fit but I would have had to redo my filler tube.  To me it just wasnt worth it.

I put a tank from an 85 long bed "1 ton" in my 83. holds 20 gallons. had to cut the rear saport
and move the shock from in front of the axle to the rear of the axle. and the 20 gal. tank was taller to.
had to make a spacer to lower the front mont down. and raise the bed abour .5 of an inch.
even used the EFI pump too. butt that was a bit much.

oh and it's great having more fuel on a trip.

helps to take the bed off then look at it.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

Was it an extended cab 85 4x4 you swapped from brainlessfool???
If so I just happen to have one sitting at my buddies shop.
Sounds like the swap isnt all that hard.

it was a 85 long bed, a short bed should be about the same or shorter tan the one I put in. a bit of work butt worth it to get away from that 13 gln tank.

This is some good info cause I've been wondering about this cause I'm wanting to do this myself.  13 gallons on a trip just plain sucks, would be nice to have a 20 gallon.  What all rigs had the 20 gallon tank?

I did not know any trucks had a 20 gln tank, I was thinking I had a 18 gln tank on my hands. till I drove it to fill it up.
anyway I don't know how many or anything about what ones other than a 85 long bed "1 ton" that have a 20 gln tank.
butt nothing wrong with 18!

My '84 Xtra cab has a 19 gal tank.

I believe those tanks only came in the long wheel base trucks because the mounting provisions simply don't fit in the short wheel base trucks. The tank may be too long but if you could get it to fit a short wheel base rig It won't fit all the way under the cab and may sit directly over the rear axle which may get in the way during suspension compression. Haven't seen it done...but I suppose nothing is impossible.  :twocents:  :beerchug:

Not to concerned about the length as my rig will never be super flexy.

ya know there's one other thing you mite be intrested in.
I ran a secand tank in the bed for a while. used a valve inline to switch it.
well I would switch over to it and the fuel return would send the rest back to the main tank, so as I would drive down the road my fuel would go down and when I turned on the valve and run the motor from the tank in the bed
the main tank would refill.
took some time, like 30-45mins butt not nearly as much work as the tank swap I did latter.
just have to be willing to lose a bit of bed space. if it had not been for the cab-over camper I
take hunting I never would have done the tank swap.

I was just reminded that there is an Aux add on Tank that is available (don't know who makes it) but it mounts in place of the spare tire under the bed. I believe it's either a 10 or 15 gallon tank or somewhere in between. Just FYI.

Any idea who makes that?   That sounds interesting.

I'd have to ask a buddy of mine. He had one. But it isn't smog legal, if you care about that at all.

What i have been wanting to do (it would be a lot of work) is to take the extra stock short bed tank i have and have a local shop cut and weld the fill neck to the other side.  then mount the tank on the opposite side of the bed and do some body work to have it coming out the side of the bed.  I want it to look like it was factory.  It would be a lot of work, but i like the idea of it.  another option is to jut get  an extra racing fuel tank and get a transfer pump.

Only problem I see with the idea of another tank on the drivers side is having to deal with where to run the exhaust.  No something I'm going to do but would love to see it when your done.

I found a lead on a 16 gallon long bed tank up in Oregon.  They are impossible to find here for some reason.  I am pulling the bed of my short box 82 and I am going to try to fit that 16 into that frame.
If anyone has done this let me know if it is possible.

again, I put a 20 gallon tank in my 83, so a 16 should be made to fit with some work.

I just scored a longbed tank for $15!
Tomorrow the bed comes off and the fabbing begins.  I will try to post up a few photos of how or if it goes!
Thanks everyone for the help.
This mod should be interesting.
