Electrical issues..
« on: Oct 05, 2011, 09:22:18 PM »
Alright so im having a slight problem with my truck.

Its an 88 with a 22RE.

Whenever i turn my lights or blower motor on my truck bogs down and loses power.

I have a 140 amp alt http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWM-47294/
And this battery http://www.interstatebatteries.com/cs_eStore/Products/RT/PID-SRM-4D%28Commercial%29.aspx?dsNavigation=Ntk~SearchGroup|4d|3|%2cNy~True%2cNtpc~Disabled%2cAro~0%2cNs~product+Type|101|1|&Title=Marine+R%2fV+-+30+Months+-+1314+CCA

I obviously have enough power floating around  my alt is BRAND NEW  i just got it today and put it in.

The truck also has a mild sputter. I stuck a new TPS on and it helped a small bit.
I just cannot figure this out for the life of me and im to the point of burning the truck to the ground.

Does anyone have any ideas at all ? Ive gone over every single connection/fuse/sensor/relay and replaced them multiple times so i know its not those.

A big alternator will put a big load on the engine when it's trying to supply amperage.

Sounds like a voltage regulator problem to me, or its a loose or too small of a supply wire.

Alt is internaly regulated so no considering same problem with 2 different alts. . And my supply is a 4gauge wire and they call for a minimum of 8 gauge with the 140 amp which was way more than enough for the 60 amp so i should be fine there.

There is 2 green plugs that go to the battery.  One of those is for the alt and other supplies power to inside of the truck.  Check one of those for being loose or grounding out.
I still think the voltage reg is bad.  When you turn on the lights its basically asking for more power and the alt is not kicking up the power.
If you put a voltage tester on the battery what voltage is it reading ?

2 Green plugs? no dude..  You understand as i said in the first post that this is a 1988 with a 22RE right ?  There is no voltage regulator outside of the alternator and since it does it with 2 different ones its not that.

But here just to humor you

fuse block area

power plug on drivers side

Alt

Wiring that comes off the alt setup

Yes that wire is cut. the truck as i have stated has a GM alt conversion so it uses only 1 stock wire (yellow) for the charge light It auto excites itself.

Engine running

Engine off

Now can we be on the same page?

IronClad, I'm going to be putting the same alt on my 88. I'm going to do a three wire setup vs the 1 wire though. Check out Mad enterprises tech article(s) on this. Maybe it will help figure this out?

Weird problem. I can see why you are ready to burn the truck down. Obviously no short or you would blow fuses or melt down wiring.

Your meter shows good battery voltage plus you said its new so it should load test good. Meter showing good charging voltage too. You said all connections are good.

Blower motors pull a pretty good load but regulator should sense it and alt output should cover it.

My first thought was the new alt pulley may be too big putting too much of a load on your eng but, you said same thing happens with stock alt and wiring. I think that new alt puts out 80 amps @ idle.

Is it possible your old setup was bad and couldn't keep up and now the new one is but, is too much of a load at idle? I don't know, just throwing ideas out there.

I'm not a big fan of one wire setups. Check out those tech articles and let us know if you figure it out.

This alt is actually a 3 wire setup ( though i think that alt can be ran as either 1 or 3 wire? ) the tag that came on the alt said 97 amps at idle and 139 amps at max capacity. Ive been running a GM alt since late last year and this is just a newly developed problem.

I think im going to just rip my dash apart and just start going through the entire harness.. maybe somthing went bad somewhere =(

IronClad, did you ever get this figured out?

I'm getting ready to do a GM alt swap on my 88. Hopefully I don't develope the same problem.

Maybe check your grounds or add some more maybe corroded or loose?
