2nd, 3rd and 4th gear strength
« on: May 15, 2011, 11:34:58 AM »
ive recently put dual cases in my yota with 4.7s in the rear case, is 3rd gear or even second to weak of a gear to climb with both cases engaged and all the extra torque. i know reverse is a pretty weak gear but only because of the coast side of the diff, is say 3rd with 2:28s and 4.7s engaged and getting on the throttle if i had to a little bit is that a big no no. im not to familiar with the transmission gears

On most toyota transmissions the weakest gear is 5th.  4th is a 1:1 so it will be strong enough to handle higher torque but as a rule of thumb for me I try to stay in 1st 2nd or 3rd.  Most who run dual cases like you run in 2nd and 3rd.  1st if both cases are in low.  Its how I run mine with 4.7s in the rear.

you could have 6 transfercases and never break a gear in your transmission because the torque doesnt get multiplied till it reaches the first/second tcase

exactly. it's like saying there's more force on your motor in 1st gear vs 2nd gear. the only thing that get's affected is what's behind it. except axle gears, that's a bit different

Thats not totally true.  When the engine is under load the whole drive train gets equal load.  So no matter what the torque is transferred throughout the whole drivetrain.
True the tcases do take most of the load but the trans will always take the load of the engine torque.  I personally wouldnt want to wheel in 5th gear all the time.  Its just not designed for high torque.

sweet thanks guys for all your input. makes scence just was mainly curious about crawlin in 3rd if i ever felt the need to. ive found 2nd gear in double double is pretty nice vs just 4.7s in 1st. just still like to be somewhat easy on my stuff since its gotta get me home to after a day on the trail lol
