85 runner getting back into it again
« on: Sep 27, 2013, 10:29:27 AM »
In 2009 I sold my old rig Project black and tan with hopes of completing a partnership in a new business and being able to get a F-Toy and cummins tow toy. Well it didnt work out and I was left broke with no toys  :rivers: :rivers:
I did not think I would or could get back into it but after seeing my buds out all summer having fun and rubbing it in on FB we decided to get back into it.
got another 85 runner. build coming soon!!

I need to get the front welded and hemmered back into shape. when i bought the truck it came with a huge mad max crawler bumper. The weight and leverage of the bumper was too much for the thin front x member.

it came with nice interior and a nice rear cargo/ carpet kit deal. I hate it though its all 1/2" or 3/4' particle which is super heavy and over kill for what i want. eventually I would like to pull it and sell it. I looks great but its all blk carpet and my dog is Red so it will look like hell fast.

what i would like to do is;
3rz swap w/ fresh w56
duals then later add a 4.7 to the rear case
davez tripple shifter
fj62 front with ifs hubs 61" wms
spacers in the rear to match the front
RUF and F150s or 4" All Pros if i can find a good deal while having money at the time (m sure plenty know what thats like)
I always find the best deals when I am broke as a joke!!
35"s then eventually go up to 37s
its going to be built to drive to the trails and back
nothing special, just enough to be out there with friends and fam and have a good time

Looks good. I am guessing you learned your lesson and will not be selling this rig anytime soon.

While you are looking at fixing the front of the frame I would suggest getting a "front bumper reinforcement" that a few companies sell.

Like this.... if interested, PM me for info on 1 for a great price  :shhh:...

picked up my shaved and plated rear the other day. I did the same set as my last rig. I think this one came out nicer though.

I am a little bummed that the guy who did the welding for me didnt bolt up the 3rd I gave him so there is some warping and right now the 3rd no longer lines up with the studs perfect.
plan is to use the stud eliminator kit and hammer the bolts to line up and hope for the best :dunno: :dunno: :crossed:

In the first post of your build thead it said "heart transplant".  I thought you meant you, and not the motor for a second.  Damn, glad I reread.

Looking foward to more.

On my rig I kept bumping the lower studs on rocks and snapping them... which ended up really biting me on the last RoundUp.  I just went to 10mm studs, hoping for no more broken studs.  After drilling/tapping for the 10mm studs, the stud alignment was slightly off like you're describing yours are now.  I ended up just putting some nuts over the ends of the studs to protect the threads and used a small sledge to knock them into alignment.  Worked pretty well... and hopefully the 10mm studs are big enough I won't be breaking any.

Swilson that's just what I did but I did it one stud at a time. I still have yet to bolt a 3rd and fill w/ oil to check for leaks. I did the beef studs on my last housing but decided against it on this one incase of trail breakage and spare support of friends or vendors. If some one does happen to have a spare 3rd that just happens to have the same gear set what are the odds it's going to be drilled out for the 10mm beef studs?

I got some little updates but i been busy/ lazy. Starting to collect parts for my duals set up this month. Worked a deal with the wifey to get more spending money on my rig. doing $500-$1000 a month till its "wheelable" so that means duals set up and my axles put under. I still have a few mechanical issues i need to deal with but time and money. I have been pretty motivated lately and have been working on the truck at least every other week. Been doing at least a little something almost every week.
