22re wire harness questions.......
« on: Dec 23, 2010, 02:15:32 PM »
So the original 22re finally died in my 85 toy. I was going to rebuild the engine when I came up on a complete 91 22re with wiring harness. Here's my question.....can i just connect the new wiring harness to the ecu that came in my 85 toy and have it pass smog? Or do I have to use the 91 ecu with the new engine so that every thing works properly and thus passes smog?  Just wondering.......thanks in advace.

If I remember correctly from when I did my re swap, the 91 is a different ecu, with different plugs.  also the 91 engine will have more sensors, and the engine harness is different, along with the intake too.  i would swap as much off your motor as far as sensors, harness, etc. and go that route to be safe.

Thanks for the info. Its appreciated. I was thinking as much. However i did also buy the ecu. If I completely swapped out the 85 with the 91 engine, wiring harness, and ecu would I have to get it checked by the DMV or would it still be smogged as an 85? I was told that if I did a complete swap I would have to get it cleared by the DMV first. Anyone have any info on this. I live in california. Thanks again.

i have an 85 that was originally carburated.  i swapped it for 85 efi and took it to the ref.  he told me once i got there that i didn't need to being the truck came with the option of efi.  in your case though, the efi is different.  i think it depends on the smog tech and whether or not he knows the difference between what the 85 and 91 efi setup looks like.  call the BAR and ask.  even if you did decide to run the engine harness from the 91, you would still be looking at swapping out a few things under the hood like the coil, ignitor, distributor, etc.  sorry, its been a few years since i did mine, but i think the body harness actually plugs into the ecu somewhere too.  there is 3 plugs on the ecu, and i know the engine harness and body harness get connected somewhere under the kicker panal.  i'll see if i can find my old post...

Just swap out the blocks.  Reuse the 85 intake, and exhaust.  And you'll pass smog, and the visual.

I agree. There is no reason to use everything from the 91. Use the longblock and reuse everything else from the 85.
