Bad T case Vibe
« on: Nov 23, 2010, 10:54:19 AM »
Hey dudes, I am getting a bad intermittent vibration from what I think is the tcase when I go above 40mph in 4 hi.

I have an NP435 trans (granny 4 speed) with an A/A to the toyota topshift tcase. I just rebuilt it with marlin 4.7 gears and there rebuild kit. It was my first rebuild, but it went really easy and I felt very confident about it. It also has a FROR  twinstick.

The vibe goes away when I put it into 2wd with the hubs still locked. I believe this rules out the transmission and the front driveline (cause the vibe would still be there). Has to be the Tcase. The only thing I can think of is to check the fluid level  :rivers:

Does this ring a bell to any of you?

Dustin

BUMP! -and make that above 25mph in 4 hi. Nothing in 4 low, nothing in 2 hi or low. It also doesn't seem to be related to being under load.

I searched and got nothing  :headscratch:  Really nobody's ever had a tcase vibe!?  :help:

If I just screwed up a bearing or something wouldn't it whine all the time?

Also remember that front drive lines are not always balanced and with a CV joint (which is recommended with a dual case setup), and are greatly affected by suspension lift. Despite using 2WD with the hubs engaged, if there is no torque transmitting through the line its possible to not bind, shake and rattle, which may yield a false diagnosis.

To be absolutely sure it isn't the front drive line, its best to just remove it all together and then drive in 2WD with the hubs engaged.

Thats a great idea. I'll take it for a spin when I pull it out to change the joint.
