Will a T-case rebuilt fix a sliding bearing?
« on: Nov 03, 2008, 07:14:59 PM »
I have a bunch of these '79-'83 T-cases here and on all of them both the input shaft and the bearing below that slides freely inside the T-case housing.  Grabbing the input shaft, I can slide the shaft with the bearing in and out by about 3/8 to 1/2" and it is the bearing sliding in and out of the housing.  To me it seems as if the aluminum housing is worn.  Are these bearings not supposed to be like any bearing where you have to press them on and off with a certain amount of force?  The bearings litterally fall out the housing.  Either they are supposed to be this loose, or I just have to keep looking for a housing that isn't worn or a new bearing will sit flush.  So, which one is it please?

haha i put my 4.7  gears in today, and yeah mine was doing the same thing. I was confused like no other, my bro-n-law said there was something, wrong So i tore it apart again, it turns out the only thing that keeps those bearings from falling out is the transmission case, it butts up against the bearing keeping them in place. Talk about a waste of an hour Lol...  :shake:
I blame the automatic transmission for the wussification of America

Thats normal. Slip fit. The small metal retainer over the edge of the bearing holds it enough to attach to trans where it butts up like green yoter mentioned.
