I wouldn't go with a higher octane it won't make a difference. I think the #1 thing to do with older vehicles is to pre-test. It can save you from becoming a gross polluter which is like going to hell in a handbasket. If it passes on the pre-test the tech will run the real test, if it doesn't he can abort it and you can resolve the issue. There is a sticky thread around here on one of the sections with a lot of good info in it.

I agree use 87 and get a pretest to see where you stand. Lowering the timing a few degrees will help also.

I live in Santee and have used the Smog Only station on the corner of Magnolia and Mission Gorge Rd for years untill my '87 didn't pass this year.  I won't use that station again because the owner/operator doesn't speak good enough english for me to understand what to do about it not passing.  He gave me a packet about the state assistance program (which isn't even going anymore).

I just met the owner of Pepper Drive Test Only in El Cajon and talked to him about my trucks smog issues.  I will definately be bringing my truck in there once I run a tank with the Rxp additive through it to lower the Nox.  His name is Mark Holt and seems like a pretty cool dude.  He told me a few tricks to do to lower the Nox and I've heard them before but just that a smog guy told me about them makes him ok in my book.

Will do.

Looks like I'm going to be loosing my job soon though so smogging this truck might have to wait.  I have another for a DD.

Yeah, I'll have to post some before and after specs with the RXP on my '87 22re.  The NOX were way to high to pass the first time.  I also changed up the vacuum line routing to get the EGR to open up sooner.  Now, I just need to get some money to pay to have it tested.
