COMFY SUSPENSION ADVICE
« on: Aug 17, 2010, 07:57:07 PM »
I have a 1980 Pickup with stock springs and Rough Country shocks all around. I've replaced all bushings, so the suspension feels tight. When driving through large bumps in the road or a bumpy trail, though, the truck rides extremely rough. What kind of suspension setup would be soft and comfy? I plan on this being my next major project, so I don't expect an easy fix. (Suggestions based on experience please) Thanks

I am going to say it depends.... depends on what you want to do with the truck, how you are trying to make it perform, how much your budget is, how much fabrication skills you have, lots of variables

I had TG 4" fronts and chevy rears, not bad but I should have pulled a front leaf spring to soften the pack. Now the Bilstien shocks made a world of difference going down the road!

I find the wagoneer springs and 4wd chevy rear 63 springs are very comfortable on the road and off. I have also ridden in a lot of trucks with Marlin springs and they ride even better IMO.

If you want You could do RUF and f150s or whatever and tune them to your liking by adding/removing leaves and even cutting some down. That way it is exactly how you like it. Your question has so many variables you aren't going to get a "good" answer. If I was you I'd go links and coilovers or ORI struts all the way around..... :turtle3:

Great point. I found the stock waggys and stock 4wd chevys to be fine without the need to add or remove leafs.

You are going to get rid of those POS shocks right. They are called "Rough County" for a reason and it is not there wheeling ability.

I do plan on sticking with a leaf spring suspension. RUF will probably be the way i go. What will i need(besides the leafs, of course) to mount up the RUF and some chevys or f150 springs in the rear? Will i HAVE TO run crossover steering with the RUF? Will the rear pack need to be modified for the front?

More than likely you will need 2 sets of rears and make a 5 leaf pack. It's a bit more involved than just bolting on leaves if you want your shackle angle rite, If you cant figure the rest out.....

There is a ton of info to read about RUF suspensions and chevies or f150s, I dont care to retype it all for you here, maybe someone else will...

Thanks. I can look up the info. I've got access to 4 rear leaf packs, so i should be set for the front.

Any reason to go with f150 springs instead of 63 chevies in the rear?

depending on the size of tires you are planning on using they stick out the back really far. I had some I installed and never even drove on them because they stuck out 1 foot or more past the 36's. If you have a long bed or 4runner that you dont plan on chopping it probably wont hinder you much more than it already is.

I plan on staying with 33 in tires for sure. Any springs that would work better with 33s?
