power steering
« on: Jul 21, 2010, 10:23:03 AM »
i have a 86 4runner with a 22re and my question is when im driving down the road the steering fells fine and for a couple of turns i have to really crank on the wheel to get it to turn. when im trying to turn tight like turning in to a parking stall its really hard and when it is 4wd with the arb unlocked in its still hard to turn

any ideas do i have the vacuum line crossed or do i need to play with the white idler screw

Sounds like either the pump has air in it and is not self bleeding as it should or your pump is failing.  I am guessing you have the ps pump with the 2 vacuum lines on.  Those lines really dont do much.  heck if you remove them you wouldnt even notice.  Most of the time hard steering to one side and not the other is due to low pressure.  It also could be your steering box or linkage is binding up some where but if it was I am sure you would have heard it.  Find another pump and see if it helps 1st.

Is the pump making any noises? When mine gets tough to steer it is due to overheating the fluid.  But this takes awhile. Make sure the fluid level is good and bleed the system.

np Just a little advice......flush your ps out well.  It will help that pump last a lot longer.
