HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: Jun 29, 2010, 07:59:35 PM »
??? OK... Heres the deal. my runner stoped starting via the key. so it being a daily driven vech I had to do something so I bypassed the switch and it worked.  :burnout: then I was driving to work and it started studering like it had bad gas. so it being less than half a tank I swung by the pump and filled it up with the GOOD stuff and a bottle of octane boost. :flamer: Off I went and no help. Then the truck went dead. no flashers, turn signals, radio. then a buddy showed up and pulled started me and it started and I was able to drive it home but studering above 2000 rpm and still no signals and the radio will turn on but only with a blue glow and no noise. A buddy said check the o2 sensor so I pulled it out and sprayed it down with brake clean and reinstalled it. and still it runs fine below 2000 rpm but HORRIBLE above. so i read the code and it popped a #10- "No starter switch signal to the ECU". So I hooked up the ignition wire to the starter and it works.  :yikes: Still running bad above 2000 and no signals. I checked all the fuses and no bad ones. I NEED SOME HELP. anyone? PLEASE oh yes i forgot it is an 85 non sr5 runner with the 22re out of an 87 runner.  :sneeze: The things I have changed to try to resolve the issue with no luck: ECU (X3), Positive and Neg batt cabels. fuel filter is new.

You got a wiring problem somewhere.  I doubt its any sensor problem.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

if it went completely dead I'd look at the igniton switch, alternator wires, battery cables and all grounds.  It could actually be a bad alternator.  If it doeasn't have enough juice it can't power the fuel pump or the ecu.  try disconnecting the battery with it running.  If it dies then you got a charging issue.

I had to do something so I bypassed the switch and it worked.  :burnout:

I'm thinking that whatever you bypassed did something else as well. I'm not great with wireing but what about trying to return it to factory (pre bypass) and replace the ignition tumbler or whatever is bad  :dunno:

sounds like you might have a short somewhere. did you recently install the cd player? my car started shorting because of the radio harness and started blowing fuses like crazy... i'd check for wires loose in the dash as well. it seems a lot of the problems are coming from the dash because your radio, ignition, and flashers all stopped working... electrical can be tricky! takes a lot of patience...

Check all your fuses, did you ever smell anything burning?  Try replacing the flasher relay, you may have fried it.

Try a different battery, I had the exact same thing happen. There could be a piece of the battery broken inside moving around and shorting it out.

I will try the battery tonight. I want to wait in the ignition switch (its a pain I have heard) is there any easy way to test it?

Just so you know my battery tested good it would short out while driving, it would sputter, shut off and do all the things you are talking about. The only way I ever found out was one time it stayed shorted when the piece lodged in the plates.

Good luck... I hope it ends up being something simple like the battery... I just had to rewire my entire tuck. I completely rebuilt my dash and engine harness because of a short in the wire for the back up lights. It melted through my entire harness. I had the fuse blow a couple times, I unhooked the back up sensor on the trans and was on the road. I figured I would get to it when I had a little more time. When I unhooked the connectore for the back up lights, I put a new fuse in, one for the gauge cluster and back up lights is the same. I ran the truck for a couple weeks that way then one day I was driving down the freeway and smoke started barroling out of the dash. The fuse I put in was defective and didn't blow. The entire harness melted down, luckily the truck didn't go up in flames. I would strongly encourage you to take a good look at your harness.

ok so I went camping this weekend and it rocked. alot of fun but i got a new symptom. it did it again to where it died. them a buddy of mine told me to jumper a plug in the engine bay and now it runs fine just no blinkers. the plug i jumpered makes the pump run all the time when you jumper it. does anyone know what that plug bypasses? maybe this is my link I HOPE.
