dual case oil question...
« on: Apr 18, 2010, 12:45:06 AM »
Hey guys, just my duals in. Filled the crawl box with 1qt and the rear tcase with 2qts. Decided to check the fill plug to make sure that was enough oil. When I removed the plug oil poured out, I would say close to 1qt!!!

My question: Since the cases/tranny slope downwards towards the rear, did the oil from the crawl box move to the rear tcase?

Just trying to figure out why that much oil would have come out...and how to accurately fill 'em up.

Thanks!

did you completely disassemble the rear tcase or did you assume the rear case was empty??

chances are if you didnt disassemble the rear case a good bit of oil was still in it

Did not disassemble the cases, you are probably right and there was oil in it. To get the level right, would i just let the oil out until it is just barely coming out of the fill hole? Or, will there always be more oil than normal coming out due to the extra quart in the crawl box?

I fill my dual cases by removing the front shifter and rear fill plug.  I put the oil in it until it just starts coming out of the fill hole.  Then I drive fairly slowly for about a minute to get the oil in all the gears.  Repeat filling from the the front shifter until it comes out of the filler again and your done.  If I was you I would drain your cases and refill them as above.
