Gasket or RTV on FJ40 3rd members??
« on: Feb 08, 2003, 11:01:52 AM »
I have noticed on several online "How to" Differential R&P or Locker articles, that everyone appears to use paper gaskets for 3rd member installation.

I have always used Copper RTV on Dana Diff Covers.  Is there a specific reason to use the paper on the Land Cruiser 3rd member?

I have always felt that RTV is much easier to clean and re-prep.

Opinions please

Rtv is much easier to toss in the tool box also...I use a gasket if I have one around, if not then rtv...no rips or tearing of gaskets with it...way to go..

I am a fan of stock gaskets. In the diff side you want the OME gasket. Silicone will not allow it to seat/torque and it could work loose. On the rear cover, I use the factory cork. A little goo to hold it in place though.

I used RTV to put my mini rear end back in and now it leaking like a sieve. So I'm going to have ta take it back out and you can be sure that I will be using a paper gasket. oh and my front that I did at the same time is just starting to leak. great. thank you RTV . go paper!!!

A friend of mine works for toyota and he use stuff he calls FTG sealent and he brought It home and we use it on everything. Front and rear end, oil pan, and valve cover cam seals and so on never had a problem.  I don't know if its a toyota thing or you can buy it at the parts store but I swear by it.

the right stuff is good stuff, but dont use it on stamped metal parts(chev valve covers, auto pans etc.) its sticks like glue and is hard to pull the part back off latter!
