22r cuts out
« on: Feb 17, 2010, 02:04:31 PM »
Trying to narrow down a problem I am having. When engine is cold and gas pedal is gradually pushed in about half inch, the motor begins to climb up in rpm's then shuts off or flutters. When I push further then the half inch fast enough before the engine cuts out, it acts normal no matter how much you rev the motor beyond that first half inch.

It's even more noticable when trying to start off in 1st and second and so on. Carb needs a rebuild? I know the header has a leak, but I'm clueless when it comes to carberators. Have had the truck for 3 months, and so far have replaced dist cap, rotor, wires, spark plugs, sea foamed the crankcase and fuel tank, and apse replaced fuel filter, motor oil/filter. Truck runs great at highway speeds in 5th. It's just some hesitation. It's less when truck is warm, but still there. Sometime it makes the truck jerk when going into gears and giving it gas.

Help me please

Accelerator pump? I don't know much about the Toyota carbs but on most carbs it sounds like the accelerator pump (squirter) isn't giving any or enough fuel when you open the throttle.

stop buying gasoline thats got ethanol in it.  its that simple.  here only Citgo's have pure gas all others sell ethanol mix at 10%

my truck on the 10% ethanol gets about 11 miles per gallon and runs like CRAP  on non ethanol tainted gasoline it runs great and gets 17 miles per gallon

Glen, you may reconsider running anything citgo after you look up what they support...

My 82 is doing the same thing and its the carb base gasket leaking.  Since the factory insulators are no long around you have get gaskets from carb places and even then it never seems to seal correctly.  I ended up making my own gaskets with a much thicker gasket material then using permatex spray on gasket sealer.

I think I'm just going to either buy a rebuild kit, or convert to weber and be done with it...... Thanks everyone for the help

Weber isnt going to solve the problem if its a manifold leak or vacuum leak.   The carb isnt likely the problem.  Look into vacuum leaks.

Don't waste your money on a weber, you'll just open up a whole nother can of turd flavored worms.
