'75 4x4 re-do and upgraded
« on: Oct 28, 2010, 03:19:21 PM »
Ok here is what I got (sorry no pics, still new to board) 1975 Hilux that was converted to 4x4 in the late '70's, b4 the 1st Toyota 4x4, with an early Jeep Dana 28 closed knuckle front axle (drum brakes! :smack:) and a divorced Dana 20 t-case. 20r has been replaced with a 22r, Still has the old 2wd rear end, and 2wd 4speed tranny.  Other than the cab floor and minor frame rot, its solid.  Starting with upgrades on the rear. Took the bed off, removed the nasty gas tank that had been hammered to fit, the shocks that were held on with nails for cotter pins, and bailing wire on the bottom cause the stud was too short for the shocks.  Cutting all other bs off.  Cleaning frame to patch and paint.  Will make new rear cross memeber, and  move the rear spring hangers back to the rear frame stubs, bob and dove tail the bed, fuel cell and cage.  Getting a rear end from and IFS truck to replace the 2wd one.  Not decided on what to do for rear springs, dont want to the chevy spring thing, so i gotta do a little more research on the subject before I set on a plan.

Jumping to the front quickly I question, will the Jig for the SAS rear spring mount location work with my 1975 2wd frame? thanks in advance

minor update.  Traded an old ranger pickup I had for some parts.  Got an IFS rear end, w56 trans w/a fwd shift case, and a set a wheels and tires.  Rear end needs a rebuild, budy had it apart to do so, but gave up on it.  Debating on a Disc conv. cause regardless the brake need total rebuild.  3rd mem is in good shape, going to put some new bearings in.  Pic soon, but the 3rd mem my buddy had in the front of his truck and pinion pre-load was F-up and would let the pinion grind into the carrier when in reverse, and the shocker is, no major damage, just going to smooth it out and run it i think.  I'll get the pic up, and ya'll let me know what u think?

Now all I need is a front axle and top-shift case. then get my A$$ moving!

I want a smog exempt yota..

Just move to the Mid-West. its all smog exempt hahaha LOL.  (well most of it)

You could have a 92, with a 22re, take all the emmis controls off, cat, egr, you name, drive over the the DMV/ S.O.S. office and tag it.  At least here in IL, unless you live in Cook County (heart of Chicago) no smog testing to speak of

here is the damage

and my frame rot, only major rust on the whole truck (outside of surface/pin holes)

and this is the dana 20 that was in the truck

and not a good shot, but the ugly crossmeber that held the Dana 20.  Had pieces of rubber hose cut for bushings , but I guess at least they tried.

Go with F150 springs for the rear, if your lucky maybe you could find a Land Cruiser front axle with e-locker.
