2wd tranny?
« on: Nov 19, 2004, 12:41:31 PM »
I have a friend with an 86 2wd yota and the tranny took a shiat on him.  Fortunately I have a 96 tacoma 2wd 5spd.  Was curious if the 96 tranny will bolt up to the 22re. Thanks in advance Rob

I was told the blocks are completely different so I would say no, but if you go to your local toy dealer, figure out which parts guy doesn't have a chip on his shoulder and get real chummy with him he might give you a solid yes or no.  My brother works in parts at a toy dealer in oregon, I'll email him tonight and let you know asap,  Nate

the 3RZ in 4wd tacomas uses a W59 tranny...i'd assume the 2wd one uses a W transmission as well.  seeing that toyota engine familes(R, RZ, M, A etc) always share the tranny bellhousing pattern with it's relatives(20R, 22R all share block patterns), i can say the bellhousing from a 3RZ will work on a 2RZ, and a 3RZ bellhousing is compatible with W and G transmissions.

however, i think the tranny from a 2RZ is also a W, so it should bolt to your truck's bellhousing

So basically all I need to do is swap bellhousings.  I guess if it doesn't work than it doesn't work.  Doesn't hurt to try.  Thanks Everybody.
