Vaccum advance
« on: Dec 28, 2009, 01:13:12 PM »
Trying to figure out my vaccum advance on an 85 22r. Are both hoses supposed to pull vaccum? When I unplug the hoses there is no change in idle.I sucked on the vaccum advance and it does open, just thinking maybe there is not enough vaccum? Any help would be great!
Thanks

one of the the lines is going to advance the other is to retard the timing you probably dont notice a difference when you pull one off cause it goes off manifold pressure

I thought when you time it, you have to time it plugged and unplugged? but the timing doesnt change when i unplug it..

the timing wont change unless you rev the motor when you do that the pressure changes in the manifold which pulls the plunger advancing it when the idle comes back down it pushes the plunger which retards it, but i believe you are right, to set the timing you unplug the two hoses from the advance but cap them off temporarily, you are going to have 2 forms of advance the first is mechanical weights in the distributor and the second is vacuum at least that's how it was explained to me. when i had a problem with mine my shop teacher told me that the vacuum advance was for cruising and if you hit the gas the weights are already out so they cant advance the timing that's were the vacuum comes in

both lines need to be pinched off to set timing

and they offer vacuum at different times

i'd have to get my book out to tell which one did what  :screwy:

Niether should have Vacuum at Idle. However procedure is to disconnect/plug them to set base timing.
