Sealing a Weber
« on: Nov 08, 2009, 08:50:39 AM »
I recently took apart my Weber and performed the vent modification. When finished, i noticed a gas leak around the adapter plates. I then took the carb off, as well as the spacer between the carb and adapter plate. Upon reinstalling a new gasket and the aluminum spacer, i put a hairline crack in the spacer when trying to tighten the studs :smack: I later found out these studs DO NOT need to be more than finger tight!! :hammerhead:
1. Do i need to get a new spacer, or could i seal it up somehow?
2. If using Weber gaskets, do i need to use some sort of gasket sealant too?

Thanks

:slap:  what did you use a impact :slap:

they are 6mm bolts, i just cant understand why people think those tiny bolts need 50 ft pounds

YES you need a new adapter
No  normally you dont need sealant for the gaskets but i VERY light film doesnt hurt

I'm a cheap b*std, so I'd grind a little bevel in the crack, clean it really well with carb cleaner, then jb weld it with 1/4" overlap on either side.  Then I'd send the wife on an erand, throw a piece of 220-400 wet sand paper on the glass coffee table, wet it down and slide the adapter over it till I had a clean flat mounting surface.  Then when it's all clean and pretty, I'd install a new gasket and hand tighten the nuts with a wrench and call it good.  I've never had a weber leak at the gaskets in 10 years of running one so  :dunno:

Thanks for the help guys. It was my first time taking apart something like this(an intake adapter to an aftermarket carb?!) I've learned my lesson about aluminum now. If i do jb weld the spacer plate, how critical is it that the welded surface in the fuel chamber is completely flat, smooth, and contoured with the rest of the chamber?

That happened to me. Even with that crack in the adapter plate, it still ran fine.
