Broken Studs
« on: Oct 20, 2009, 09:02:26 PM »
Today 4 of my wheel studs that hold the wheel spacer on randomly broke...4!! Has this happened to any body else? Not the wide 2"+ ones either. The ones that come with the Marlin SAS kit.  :smack:

Can you get pics of the broken studs?  Good pics.
Alot of times, studs will break for several reasons.  Over/under torqued.  Old and weak studs.
Did you put some loctite on them when installed?  And periodically check them with a torque wrench.  This is the one downside of running spacers, but with some checking from time to time, you shouldn't have any problems.

Dollars to donuts they were loose since you broke 4  ;)  It pays to be anal about vehicle maintenance, especially when a vehicle sees heavy or extreme use.  I work at a busy tire shop and even if we just change 1 tire on a rig we check torque on all 4, and it's not at all uncommon to come across a few loose lugs.

do you allways tighten the wheels on the trucks with a tourqe wrench or do you just tighen it with an air gun?

Yeah thats what i figured is the domino effect. If im at my dads shop i tighten them down with an air gun and torque stick. If im at my house i use a torque wrench. I know how to change them but i was on my way over to tire rama at the time they broke so im just having them do them since they have to do an alignment and check the balance on my tires.

Your torque wrench might need calibration too.  If it's off, you could have gotten them too tight or too loose....

What do you guys consider too tight?  I usually torque all the lugs (spacers included) at 90 ft/lbs.

I was taught to torque the 21mm lugs to 75 ft-lbs.  I'm sure that's not the factory spec, but it's pretty close and I've never broken one or lost a wheel.  The 22mm lugs on the newer 5 lug cruisers and Tundras are more (around 100 ft-lbs I think).

I thought alignment and getting my tires balanced would fix my vibration but i was wrong. I still have a vibration from 40-55 mph then after 75. There is no play in my aftermarket d-shaft. any ideas?

Yeah me to!! And it hasnt been like that since my SAS. It only started about 2 months ago. Maybe my rear diff? I dont think that would be it tho since it stops at 55 then starts again at 75.

How's the wear on the tires?
How's the front end bearings?  Jack it up and check all the bearings yourself.  The trunion bearings and hub bearings.  Most alignment shops should check all the bearings for play before doing an alignment.

the inside of the tire wore pretty good. When i was coming down the mountain after hunting last weekend i was hearing a clunk in the drivers side of the front axle so i knew that was a bearing. Tore it apart and the bearing was fine it was just a little loose. The bearing tension nut got loosened up so reset that to torque and got everything back together. WHen I had it apart I didnt pay attention to see if the wheel spacer was coming loose but then a few days later is when the studs broke on the way to the tire shop. It all happens at once with my pickup i swear.

do you allways tighten the wheels on the trucks with a tourqe wrench or do you just tighen it with an air gun?

Always, ALWAYS with a torque wrench  ;)  We only snug them with the air gun using a torque stick, which limits the amount of torque transfered to the nuts.  The sequence we use is to run the lugs all the way down so the wheel sits flush against the hub in a star pattern, snug each lug again for a couple seconds, drop the rig so the wheels touch the ground, torque the lugs with the torque wrench in a star pattern, then double check torque in a circular motion to assure you didn't miss any.  I wonder how many lugs I tighten or loosen in the course of a day  :headscratch:

Oh, and the vast majority of Toyotas torque to 80-85 lbs

Yeah Nate, I use a 75 ft-lb torque stick on my 1/2" impact and then the torque wrench.  I like to make sure those things are on.  I've seen the damage from wheels flying off and I don't want to be the one responsible for that.

Yeah my dads shop that he had had the same policy. Some one would go around torque them and then somebody else would have to go around and double torque them and both people would have to sign off on it. This eleminated many problems and was a nice safety cushion as far as liability goes.

When I have my rigs worked on at the tire shop, I make them run the lugnuts on by hand.  NO airgun!!  Especially, when they don't use torque sticks.  :shake_head:  I want to hear them work the torque wrench a couple of times before they click.

They think I'm an :moon:, but I know that my wheels aren't gonna fall off.

Yeah i cant blame you there. Torque sticks arent that expensive not use for a tire shop. You gotta look at it from a buisness standpoint and that time is money. But just using an airgun with not torque sticks is just retarded!

I've made tire shops do it by hand and they didn't make a fuss, and we sometimes get somebody in who wants them done entirely by hand.  No biggie, they just need to understand that it takes longer  ;)
