Will this welder work??
« on: Sep 26, 2009, 11:31:43 PM »
After reading on pirate, im leaning towards a stick welder to build my truck. They seem cheaper, less maintenance, and everyone said they are much better to start learning on. The majority of people said a lincoln tombstone was a good choice. I found this one locally, I dont know if its the right model though. I dont think its 220, does that matter. Will it run off my house? I want to get a welder that will be able to do anything after I get practice. From hangers, to frame work if I need it. I have an abundant supply of scrap metal, and a torch to cut pieces to practice on. I just wanted to know if this welder will be capable of the penetration I need. They also said to get a dc one, is this one dc, thanks. http://chico.craigslist.org/tls/1369385462.html

the one you posted is an ac stick.  it will still work fine, as for easier i like migs better.   that welder should do around 1/2".  it will be a cheap and easy way to start welding.  if you have a junior college close you can take classes from them to learn how to weld

A mig is easier to learn on. A mig can and will penetrate just as well. I suggest you take a class

i have the same welder as posted,  it is a 220 volt 225 amp welder (assuming you turn it up to 225 on the dial)

ive used mine to blow thru 1/2 inch plate like a plasma when turned up to 225

welding on a toyota frame i use about 60 amps with a 1/8th 6011 rod

ive also welded my body panels with good results with a 6013 and 40 amps
its a very versatile welder and for that price i'd get it, although if you think you might want a mig later on get a small mig now,

Thats the kind of welder I learned how to stick weld with, and the same model that I just picked up a few months ago.  They're very easy to use, and to figure out.  Personally I think its a great start for learning how to weld.  You'll most likely want to move to a mig welder as you improve, but I think you'll be happy with this one for a long time.  Its going to be able to do pretty much everything you're wanting to do on your truck.

Do you have access to a 220 outlet, if not you should see what running one is going to cost you.

I would check w/Butte college and see when their next welding classes begin, it is likely to late to attend one now.
