drivetrain "slack"
« on: Sep 16, 2009, 05:35:15 AM »
I am just curious...

... -- when parked and on neutral, driveshaft seem to have a lot of play (not from a worn u-joints), lesser when I engage it to a gear.

.... this was also observed before I re-installed my driveshaft (after converting it to a 1-pc)... by turning the flanges from the t-case.

what I have here is a forward shifting gear driven tcase

sounds to me like excessive backlash in the differential

but I observed this when the driveshaft were removed, I turned the tcase flange by hand and found the play, and curiously engaged into a gear... and feel a lesser play

the tranny was in neutral, tcase was in 2h.
and the rear driveshaft wasn't put back on, front driveshaft was there, hubs aren't locked.

that means the rear tcase flange was ALSO in neutral

if this surprises you,  you probably shouldnt be working on your truck by yourself

Yeah, I am not going to do something I am not used to . It's the play/gap when turned back and fort, sort of backlash in the tranny or tcase , I don't know.

I just noticed it while reinstalling the rear shaft(turned 1-pc).
