What axle should I use?
« on: Aug 11, 2009, 09:29:04 PM »
I am building a 85 4Runner and have been told by many to use a newer rear axle for the extra width. What year axle is the best to use, and why? Do I need to change any of my brake component's? I have also been told that if I put a 86 or newer hub on my 85 axle it will give me the extra width to match the rear axle. What do you guys think?   :dunno:

Usual is 86 and newer rear with 1.5in wheel spacers in front. Lots of builds include this install.

Does any year come with disc brakes for the rear. Anyone tried changing the front to skip the wheel spacers?

I think you can change to the IFS spindles to gain the needed width  but don't quote me on that. Otherwise Sky Manufacturing makes a widening kit. I don't believe there is any stock Toyota rear disks, again, don't quote me on that.  :dunno:

if you want the 58" IFS front width... here is what my buddy did on his 81 front axle he is using for rear steer on his 78 Toy.

FJ60 Rotors
V6 Calipers
IFS Hubs
(4) 2"x0.5" Grabe 8 Bolts w/ Locknuts

We used a 1/2" Drill bit to drill out the ears on the Knuckles & the mounts on the Calipers
Then drilled out the holes on the Rotor so it could be bolted down to the IFS Hub.

All the spacing is correct and no spacers or "conversion" parts needed.

the hub bodies from SFA and IFS are EXACTLY the same dimensions... the flange is just cast on 1.5in out on the IFS Hub.
No need to by Spacers or Sky's Conv.

Not sure of the year of change, but the wider 86 axle has larger diameter rear drums.

Don't know if the larger drums were made at the same time it went wider or a little before it went wider.

With the bigger drums, I don't think you'd need disks in the rear.

Ok. Now on the front why is that better then running spacers? You still widen the front and add load to the bearings. Not to mention that it cost more. I like the idea but cost is an issue, I am just trying to do my homework.
Now on the rear someone told me to go with a 95 or newer and I didn't ask why. Was there any changes made to the newer models?
And last but not least, Thanks for the help and the info guys.  :)

I am not doing a SAS. My runner is an 85. I would have to go buy everything. Good thinking though.

they should be fairly cheap.

cheaper then spacers and wont allow your tires to loosen up or the spacers.

I called two places and got a price of $250 and $400. I need to get a better description of what I am looking for so I can be more specific.  I think they are pricing more then I need.

the hub body itself.

and you can not use the IFS Free Wheeling Hub Lockouts... they use a 30spl and are much larger in DIA.

you'll need to use the IFS Hub Body Wheel bearings, everything else is the same (washers, 54?mm nuts, etc)

and $250 seems way too high for a price.

if you want some and dont want to pay as much.... let me know. I may be able to snag some for you.

I believe the wheel bearings are the same so that will save some money. And the stock Solid axle hubs should bolt up.

Thanks! But I think shipping would be a killer. At this point I am just trying to do some homework to see if it is worth it. I have to pull the axle apart for a rebuild so I am trying to weigh the benefits of this compared to spacers.
