Topic: How to ID transmission models

I have a 86 PU 22r, 5spd g52 I have been looking for info on how to ID the various manual trannys g52, w56a, b, c exc. but have been unable to find anything. I have looked at the chart Marlin has but it does not give specific details on how you would tell a g series from a w series and what are the strong and weak points between the two.

G52, G54's are both forward shift,  and if you look at the details you'll see they have a smaller bearing in the front, along with different ribbing on the sides of the casing

w56a and b are top shift and just look beefier,  and came in 85-89 efi trucks

Thanks for the info. Do you know what the difference is between the a,b,c,d,e 56 series trannys and if swapping out the g52 for a w56 would be worth it?
