i know about the $500 kit.... i actually did mount the 80 style to my engine, and it almost fit, with my 87 cover, however i think if i were to mill down right where the lower sprocket is in the cover, it would clear, just about an 1/8" if this is the case, then you just need parts....

then again, there is also an issue of the chain needing to be shortened also to a 96 link

The chain on the later short-block 22re's have 2 less links than the older tall-block 22re's.

For the dual-chain kit, LC modifies the older timing cover by machining the top of it to shorten it.

Then they use the older tall-block oil pump and water pump to go with the modified timing cover.

The older-style timing cover also has more room for the dual-chain.    I don't think there's enough clearance for the dual-chain in the newer-style cover.    Some machining may do the trick, but I'm not sure if you'd machine thru the cover.

i dont think we would machine through the cover, the oil pump on the old one and everything lines up, except the very two top bolts to the block, they end up being about 3/16" too tall using the 80 cover

Forgot about the top bolts.........

When LC modifies the old-style covers, they also plug and redrill those top holes (with the shortening)...........

It seems to me that LC would take the easiest method to get a dual-chain to work.

And that just clearancing the existing cover would be easier than milling, plugging, and redrilling an old-style cover.............

So maybe the extra clearance of the old-style cover isn't for when the engine is running, but you need the extra clearance through the whole front of the cover when you have to move the top cam gear forward to slip it over the camshaft.

Its my fualt guys.  I had that dual row timing chain off the a pretty much new engine and I thought with the shorter oil pump drive gear and the cover we could make it work.  Guess the newer RE blocks are shorter by a cm so it just wasnt gonna happen.  I KNOW I can make the stock timing chain cover work from an RE engine but time wasnt on our side.  We worked on his motor till early morning.  Jim is getting a lesson in prep for engine parts.  He just needs to be slapped around to learn  :therethere:  :smack:  Anyhow guess ill be driving back to fremont to help him finish.  Teach me for being a nice guy. LOL Jim its all good bud ill get down there as soon as I get the time.  Just get that timing chain and cover installed so we can slap the head on and get the engine back in your truck.   I am heading to Vellajo in a few mins to sort thru all this 1 gen stuff and figure out whats going up for sale.   Ill give ya a call when I get a chance.

Oh and ill post some of the pics I took tonight. Forgot camera at shop yesterday.  I was there till 930 swapping my transfer cases.  The one on the L52 trans was very trashed due to water and my old on from the L50 is working perfect.  So I am glad thats all done.  Later
