Question on 4WD not working all the time
« on: Jun 21, 2009, 12:20:00 PM »
Hey guys. Quick question. I was out in the woods recently and lost the front axle it quit pulling only seemed like it quit working in 4 LOW Could this be the front detroit true trac acting up? or the transfer case. I am running detroit true trac w 4.88s stock V6 chain transfer case on the axle in question. As I said the truck pulls in 4 h but front rear seemed to quit in 4 L
Thanks
Joe

i would imagine its something in the front axle... do you have stock birfields? you may have cracked or broke one

i would take the front axle apart and get to the bottom of it

Nothing to suggest that. I had a hub problem at one time where one wouldnt engage but it was due to tire pressure differences and a hang up in the hub. The thing that got me was 20 mins before I got stuck in crick without 4WD I had crawled up a pretty serious hill.

   jack the truck up  4 jack stands   put her in 4l / 4h   and see whats turning    if the front shaft turns but not the tires its in the axle or hubs  and vise versa.

Why would the back tires pull and the front ones not dosent make any sense for it to be the transfer case.

I bet the add actuator is toast. I cant remember what said it is but hook a vacuum line up to one of them until it locks up. THen just get manual hubs

Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

How in the heck could NOT KNOW whether it's the transfer case or not?????
It's as simple as sticking your head out the door and LOOKING at the front drive line - does it move or not???

If it's moving, then I would go straight for the locking hubs.  Pull them apart.
