Exhaust gasket replacements
« on: May 23, 2009, 02:27:40 PM »
I searched around a bit and couldnt find anything on this so hear I go. Does anybody have any suggestions for replacements for the exhaust gaskets at the cat on my taco? (the little ring thingys), im just plain sick and tired of replacing them all the time (doesnt hurt performance really but the leaking sound bugs my OCD). a set only lasts about 2 months before they start to leak (only if its being wheeled and beatin on her, i cant imagine this happening from driving around on the street, but then whats the point?  :driving: )

Are the 2 flanges flush?   Or does 1 slide into the other at the flanges?

If they're flush, you can weld in a small pipe so thay 1 side does slide into the other........

has anyone ever run anything like these?

http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS/JEGS-Copper-Collector-Gaskets/750799/10002/-1

there for a 3bolt flange as you can see but if they had one of the right diameter could you file them down a bit to work? would they hold for longer? its the movement of the exhaust when wheeling that seems to be killing them

Are you buying your donuts from toyota or from kragen/vatozone?

I've never looked at them, but toyota typically uses a lot better gasket materials than the cheap :pokinit: you get at vatozone.  You may try the toyota gaskets before you give up and look into other options, and double check your torque often too.  There's no reason for a good donut to blow out if the surfaces are flush and the hardware tight!

Smear them with anti-seize when you install them.

Helps with flat exhaust gaskets, might work......

There's actually a high temp copper sealant that works for stuff like this, but I'd give the toyota donuts a shot before I slather that crap in there!

Is this stuff made by Permatex? any ideas on where i can find it. I rarely take the exhaust apart so i feel like some new gaskets plus some sort of ultra hightemp RTV/gasket maker/w.e is what i would like. I also plan on whipping together a bracket to support the exhaust by the middle to take some of the slop out of it.

A support might not be a good idea, it'll focus more vibrations on the tubing.  Best thing to do is fit it with a flexable piece to isolate the two sections, kinda like how front wheel drive car exhausts are.

Sorry, I was assuming you meant a rigid support.  If you did one with a rubber damper you'd be good.

you mean like mount a flex pipe between the cat and muffler? Ill post pics soon. my exhaust dumps out underneath infront of the rear axle and it only supported in one spot (pics soon). maybe after some visuals more answers will come to light. the brace would indeed be dampened.

For sure!  My exhaust dumps out right before the axle and stinks up the truck pretty bad!  I have a 10' stick of 2.5" and am just waiting my mandrel bent pieces I bought off ebay to show up and I can do a legit exhaust system from the header back.  I want to run a flex pipe but will have to get the entire system finished before I figure out exactly where to put it.
