« on: May 02, 2009, 07:34:21 PM »
I've got a 1990 4x4, with 5 speed, W56 transmisson in it.............

How in the world do you remove the top 2 bolts on the transmission? They are really hard to get too.. Any ideas?

The starter seems rather difficult to remove too...Other than that im good...... Help!   :shocking:

a combination of socket, wobble connector (or wobble socket), extensions, and a sound cursing will do it.  I've seen some people drill holes through the fire wall for this purpose as well.

Starters not bad, just gotta figure out the right angle to bring it through the IFS framework.

that works or use a 17mm wrench with a cheater wrench on it ive has to do that a few times especially when the bolt are really tight.

Use a floor jack & support the transfercase. Remove the crossmemeber bolts & lower the jack. Becareful not to get anything pinched between the valve cover & the firewall. This will give you better access to the top bolts.

I have a Matco 1/2" drive extention that reduces to 3/8" at the other end, then I use a 3/8" drive swivel socket. Makes it easy to get those top bolts. You can buy it online.

Matco P/N CXP5BB
Price $26.30

You don't need to remove the motor mounts. The motor mounts will flex enough that you can get access to the top bolts by removing the transfer case cross member.
