more power on V6 3.0
« on: Apr 26, 2009, 01:38:53 PM »

Hello guys.
I have a 3.0 V6 donored by a wrecked 92 canadian 4-runner mounted in my CJ5.
How can I get some more HPs in a simple manner. Is the ECU suitable to be upgraded? chip change?

Thank so much for any cool advice.
Rgds

HP upgrades don't come easy/simple w/the 3.0, most are expensive.  The K&N FIPK and headers/exhaust will allow the engine to breath easier, but figure about $1000 for those two upgrades alone.  The JET chip replacement runs about $400, and you have to send the ecu to JET.  The K&N FIPK works OK, but works a lot better when you turn it into a true cold air intake system.   I am much happier w/a cheap Raptor turbo muffler from Kragen's for $24 over the $100 high flow that I originally installed.  The high flow was great for running the engine to 70 in 3rd, but the drone and loss of mpg's on both the highway and trail wasn't a fair trade off IMO.

Other than a larger throttle body and ignition upgrade, this is about the extent of the bolt on power adders.  Enlarging the cylinders, and port matching the intake and exhaust are the best way to increase power, but also require a lot more work.

Unfortunately not any one upgrade will increase the performance of the 3.0 very much, you really have to do them all before you notice a big change in performance.

The JET upgrade should really only be done after all of the other mods, so you can have the ecu reprogrammed for the upgrades, this way you can maximize the performance of the other mods.

If you have an auto transmission, the best performance upgrade would be do swap it fro a 5-spd,  The auto trans and 3.0 is a very poor performer.

Proper gear size for the tires you are running is also important.

If you do the upgrades over a few years it isn't all that expensive(just don't add them up ).  If you are concerned w/the over all cost of the upgrades, it would be cheaper in the long run to do a 7mge Supra straight six swap.  It is rated at 200hp w/o mods, and should be able to be bolted to the 3.0 transmission.
