A little lost
« on: Jul 23, 2002, 07:05:06 AM »
Hey everybody,
Well I just wanted to solidify my newbie status witha couple questions.  First, I have a basic knowledge of my truck, an 87 4Runner, and of most functions of the sundry heavy metal objects hanging off of the undercarriage.  But, I'm having some trouble with visualizing the work that's going to go into replacing the tranny and t-case.  Anybody have a good source online for an overview of a "basic" job such as clutch replacement, rebuilding my slave and mastercylinder, etc.  I have a Haynes manual, and when searching Amazon for other Toy books have so far hit only dead ends. :help:

I would definitely recomend getting a factory repair manual from your local Toyota dealership. They aren't cheap but worth every penny. Pulling out the tranny and transfer case isn't very hard if you have some tools and a little bit of knowledge......just take your time and I'm sure you'll be fine.

follow 90Toypu's advice, get a quality manual...

then you can read up on
remove the shift knob boots, shift levers
drop the front and rear drive line
remove the wires for backup and 4 whl indicator lights
support tranny/transfer, remove cross member.
lower entire unit down slightly (watching for engine obstructions)
remove starter
remove clutch slave (leave attached to line for now)
remove exhaust pipe clamp
Support engine
remove all bolts holding tranny to engine
Lower tranny/tcase assembly down and out.

to reinstall, reverse order.

I think that's about it unless I forgot a step someone else will catch.

take care...

well trt2,

I think you got about everything, in the short version.  I just did this over the last TWO nights, but there was one other step that made it all harder.

REMOVE HEADERS!
My headers hug the block/tranny quite a bit, cuz there is NO room in my 3.0 V6 engine bay.  We did everything but unbolt the headers and tried for a good half hour to drop the tranny down (we were standing in an in ground pit holding the tranny/t-case over our heads for 10 minutes before we rolled it back and could support with jacks :ack: ).  We saw there was no way to get around removing one of the headers, which is a job in itself, and seeing as a couple guys helping had to drive home, shower, go to bed, and get up to go to work in 4 hours, we called it a night

Took around an hour to remove the driver side header, which gave us the needed room to drop the tranny down, finally.  Unbolted the press. plate, clutch disc and flywheel, and I have to get that resurfaced later.  Hopefully it will take only one night to get it all back together, but so far, everything on that truck is far more complicated than anyone has ever seen :unhappy:

Anyways Mike, you're doing the right thing by getting with a BB.  If we can't answer all your questions, there are a couple other really good ones.  Others are not so good, and another is geared more towards hard core tech.

hehe... ya, I should have specified 'For stock drive train configuration'

The first time I removed the assembly, 3 evenings, very slow and learned a lot.

The last time I did one, 2 hours!

take care...
