if it is steel it could be the thrust washers on the crankshaft wearing out. in a 22r i had the thrust washers put grooves so deep in the crankshaft that eventually the washers fell out into the bottom of the oil pan. at that point i could grab ahold of the crank pulley and slide my crank in and out at least an 1/8th of an inch! it was in pretty rough shape. i would check if you have any excessive endplay on your crankshaft to start with.

it could also be from a steel timing chain guide, but the chain has pretty low mileage so i wouldnt really expect that. but you never know i guess!

well if your engine doesnt make any noise than maybe you are ok. its hard to say what it could have been from.

If the timing chain replacement did not include pulling the oil pan, cleaning it and thoroughly flushing the oil pickup you will periodically see pieces of metal and or plastic from the guides. Just change the oil on regular intervals and make sure the drain plug contains a magnet found on stock drain plugs or can be purchased easily.
