20r fuel pump wiring
« on: Jan 17, 2009, 06:49:36 AM »
Does anybody know where the fuel pump wiring gets power from on a 79'? Im trying to repair a previous owners corn cob rewire job. And hopefuly use the factory wire. I've traced it from the pump up to the dash board and looks good so far. It's just not hot. I just didnt want to gut rip and untape everything just to fnd out where it goes...if I don't have to.

don't 20r's and 22r's have mechanical fuel pumps on the side of the head?

Not all of them are mechanical in stock form. I thought it was 80 models that had the electric fuel pump, but whatever! I personally would change it over to a mechanical setup, and put an electric on a toggle for backup if you already have the electric.

I wheeled with a fella who ran both and he would kick his electric on for long steep grades, as to not starve and stall his motor. I'm not sure what carb he was running though. It may not be necessary, but it was an interesting setup.

I have a stock 20r with a weber. Never had a problem with fuel strarvation...I just wanted to keep the wiring stock if I could. And keep the wiring clean.

I wish I could help but I am in the same boat as you. BTW my 20R doesn't have a place to mount a mechanical fuel pump.

My head is the same way. I know I can run a toggle switch. But I'd like the fuel pump to turn on with the ignition, without having to splice off of another switched power source.

I had mine on a toggle switch for a few years. (Then I wired it into the fuse box.) Sense I had to change out the fuse box. I had a few left over fuse slots. So that is what I did.
Not even sure if the fuel pump was stock. I bought my truck fro $700 and the e-fuel pump was just hanging off the side.
on 4x4wire.com they have a down loadable FSM. I have never tried reading into that part. You might want to go check them out. It's good to have.

The power is supplied from the 15 amp engine fuse to the fuel pump relay under the dash.

For the relay to work, it gets the ground feed from the oil pressure switch
which closes the contacts and the positive power is then sent to the pump. This was designed so the electric pump located in the tank would not run unless there was oil pressure.
