1953 willys need ideas
« on: Mar 08, 2010, 08:21:41 PM »

Ok so heres my willys story.

Back in high school I decided I wanted to buy something to go 4-wheeling in.  My friend’s dad is a rancher and in one of his barns I found this 53 willys jeep.  I bought it for a $1000.  She looked pretty rough when I bought her.  She had an inline 6 cylinder engine with a blown head gasket.  The engine was so long that the grill was taken off for it to fit and the radiator was welded to the bumper.  First thing I did was take the engine out.  I got a 283 v8 that was recently rebuilt for cheap and put it in.  The engine was mated to a 4-spd tranny that I think was out of a chavelle and that goes to the stock transfer case.  I did all custom linkage and it all turned out awsome.  The jeep also got headers with side exhaust.  This thing is wicked.  First time I got in it I did a 30ft burn out with ought even trying.  I then found that the front end was blown and gears were beyond my knowledge at the time, and I wanted to get into rock crawling.  I ended up trading the jeep for a 1981 Toyota pickup and I got hooked on the whole Toyota thing.  I’m now on my 3rd Toyota and I can’t get enough of them.  However things work out weird and I ended up getting the jeep back.  The front axle is still blown and the rear axle has a snapped shaft.  The rear axle is also missing quite a few teeth.

So my question is what should I do now?  I want to build it to be reliable but I’m on a bit of a budget.  What does everyone think?  I wanted to just put some new axels under it if I could find some for the right price.  Maybe something a little wider than stock.  The stock axel has the pumpkin off to one side.  Also since the transfer case is still stock I was thinking of putting in something a little bit stronger.  What are some ideas of setups I could run?  Where should I look for parts for the right price?   Any ideas would be appreciated.  Pics should be up soon.

This willys also has power steerin which is kinda cool and it has dual gas tanks under the seats which is kinda rare.  Normally one side was the gas tank and under the passenger seat was a storage place.

How much are you asking for it?  What can you tell me about it?  I have a friend that is looking for a jeep just like yours.  Please give me some details about it!  Thanks. 8)

All the details about it are at the top.  Im not really sure what its worth, but if somone offers me what seems like a fair price I wont say no.  The Willys is currently located in Carmel Valley at a family members place.  If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

I always wanted to get one of these and put Toyota axles under it (like a matching set from a 79-85) and a 22RE with duals yota cases.

It would be a trick to get the dual yota cases in.  The wheel base is pretty short.

I thought a member on here had done it, could be wrong. Otherwise, just run a single 4.7 case. :D

I think old willy's are awesome. I would leave it as stock as you can and just cruise it.
