4cy diff question
« on: Jan 25, 2009, 10:13:05 AM »
I keep getting different opinions on this topic. I want to weld my rear end. Should I take the ring gear out first to stop welding slag from damaging bearings and splatter onto ring gear? And if so if I keep the bearing caps on the same side they came off would the diff have to be reset up are could I just bolt it back together since the backspacing hasn't changed? Some people say I can just bolt it back up and others say it would have to be reset up by a gear guy. Thanks for any info on this subject.

yes you must remove the ring gear to do it properly, "setup" wont be necessary since the pinion doesnt change, but 'backlash' is changed anytime you remove the carrier, just get it snug to the pinion when you go back in you want only a tiny bit of movement between the ring and pinions
