first ones threw the Rubicon
« on: May 10, 2009, 02:48:17 PM »
i went up with my firends fri day afternoon with the intition to come out the tahoe side. didnt get on the trail till about 4pm. everything went smooth, from little sluice on there wher no tracks at all. there was a bit of snow in and around the box, but about 1/4 mile past it we didnt hit anymore. we got to the springs at about 9:30 and the bypass was closed so we had to go through the water. well once the water was above the 37s we decided to back up, and then the truck dropped another 10 inches under water. the water was up to his sterio/little bit above the seat. we stayed at the springs friday night and having a wet pillow and sleeping bag made for pretty much no sleep. my friends truck had to be towed since it wouldnt run. pulled it all the way to the look out after cadillac and magically it started running.(the MAF was wet) and kinda a long story short it took us 8 hours to get from that lookout to the exit of the con. right after the lookout from there on it was solid 4-8 feet of snow. big deep water crossings, snow walls, rolled the xtra cab. it was a long day.
but we were the first ones threw the rubicon.

i forgot my camera in my friends truck so pics will come later.

ive always wanted to go to the rubicon when theres snow there. a lot of people are saying to stay off the rubicon till the snow has all melted and to avoid going there on memorial weekend.

i'm sure conditions won't be bad for memorial day.  as long as you stay on the trail and don't drive like an idiot, everything should be ok.  with all the sun that we're getting, i bet most of the snow, if not all will be gone by then.  there wasn't that much snow that stuck around last memorial day.  it was snowing, but warm enough to where nothing stuck around.

Nice pictures, the last time I was there was Oct. several years ago. Rained the entire 3 days as we climbed Cadillac it started to snow and by the time we were back in Tahoe it was pretty heavy. I think we would have had a lot of trouble getting out if we were staying another day. Cadillac was slippery as snot in the freezing rain, probably froze solid after we got out.

So by showing pictures of you using the trail when the recommendation is to not use it helps to keep it open how? The west side of the trail is in fair shape but still wet. You saw the recommendation and still decided to go and go all the way through (not threw).

The east side of the trail will have snow and be wet through June. I can kind of see if you are not paying attention to recommendations and still go. I will fight for your right to use the trail year round and I use the trail when it has snow on it. I do not, however much I ever enjoyed it, use the Rubicon in saturated conditions like there are right now.

I personally have 500 hours dedicated to keeping the Rubicon open since Jan 1 2009. Do not jeopardize that by being foolish.

Being an admin here I can take any of this down for any reason. I want to keep it here so folks can read the about the issue and make an intelligent choice about the trail. I am glad you had a good time and it seems you stayed on the trail, for that I'll give you some kudos.

Some time in the future I hope we can be at a point where the trail is in good enough shape and all the bad spots have been rock hardened, that we won't have to worry so much about recommending use or not to use. We are not there yet.

Scott

i accually rode with a friend and if my truck was worthy i proble still wouldnt have takin it not being a fan of snow.

I/we were not aware of a recomendation of not going through

and i do agree with you that wheeling in the really wet or snow covered parts of the trail ruines it. i was a passenger and had no say in heading back the way we came.

thanks  for all the help on keeping the trail open and in good shape. i acually did notice on cadillac the rock hardened areas that would proble have been a mud slide if not done.

and i suck at spelling.

You need to read here more often. Become aware of what is going on politically with your favorite trails. Get out and VOTE come election time. With politicians in office that are not OHV friendly, we will be under the gun to be sure we keep our places to wheel.

Johnson Valley, Rubicon Tellico Moab are all under scrutiny and have actions ongoing and I expect will for at least the next four years.

Just be aware!
