How do you clean a fuel tank?
« on: Jan 14, 2009, 04:58:01 PM »
Just like the title says.  I have an 88 4-runner that has been clogging up my injectors and now I can't even move the vehicle because it stalls every time I put my foot on the gas.  I dropped the tank and looked inside and it all rusted.  I also tried to replace the fuel filter but the nuts were already stripped by the prior owner.  So I will be replacing those fuel lines.  Any suggestions??   :help:

What I have done on MC tanks is to throw a handful of nuts and bolts into it , cap it, and shake it agound alot. Then I clean it out and get gas tank sealer from a place like Eastwood and coat the inside of the tank with the sealer. You can also take them to an automotive machine shop and have it hot tanked, then seal it.

$200 with shipping!  I had this same problem with my old nissan.  It was easier to just put in a new tank.  I had it swapped out in a couple hours.

But if you really want to save the old tank, clean and seal it, POR-15 has a good setup.  http://www.por15.com/prodinfo.asp?grp=FTRK&dept=12  But this is a several day process to do this.  But you also have to remember that, where there is rust flaking off, there is metal getting thin.  And how thin are those spots?  The metal in a tank isn't that thick to begin with.  When I took my old tank off, the metal was so thin in one spot I could have poked my finger through it.  So, I would recommend a new tank.  Those cleaning and seal kits are better for a tank that is still pretty much new.

Just my 2  :twocents:
