2wd axle Q!
« on: Dec 14, 2008, 08:49:02 PM »
I am wondering how wide a 2wd axle is? I might be trading my 87 4by s10 for a 91 2wd yote. The reason I want to know is because I am thinking about maybe putting a non ifs 4by axle in the rear. Is that dumb?

it would be 3" too narrow, but you could if you wanted to.

axle bearings and carrier bearings are the same, so is it possible to swap the side gears from a 2wd carrier into a 4wd carrier, allowing use of the 2wd axle shafts? you'd end up with a 5lug 8inch rearend.

ive got a 2wd rear axle off an 84 that uses a 4wd 4cyl carrier, it came with 3.05's and i put in a 4.10 3rd member, so there are some 2wds that are runnin a 8" ring gear, but most use the 7.5 ring gear, the same as in ifs front end, so gears and lockers are available for it, either way

some do, you are right. In my case, I was wanting to upgrade for strength. Don't know about the OP though.

wanna buy my 2wd rear axle, if u throw in a 4wd one, its spring over, and 2wd is spring under, so your gonna either need new perches, or lift the front to match, ive seen a spacer for the upper a-arm ball joint, but cant remember where i saw it.  i think it was for 1.5" of lift

www.sdori.com is who makes the front balljoint spacer. i actually contacted them and helped design them. i ran the pre-production prototype on myo ld 85 2wd. some 2wds had a 8" rear end. the housings were the same as the 4wd, except sprind under and 5 lug... most of the 2wds had a 7.5" diff though.. i had an 8" 2wd diff that had 3.07s.... i put in a third from my friends 86 4x4 runner with a 4.10 gearset... you can actually swap the shafts out without issue... width is the same between generations, 84-85, and 86-95 4x2 or 4x4

so with the ball joint spacer, would match if I were to do a spring over?

Throw in a ifs rear end, 4:37s or 4:56s and a locker. Put a bl lift on it, I wonder what size tire it would fit, like a 33 maybe? I think it would be a bitchin little pick up!

ya I know it is for the front. I was wondering if by putting balljoint spacers in and a sprung over rear, would it match...

nope, the rear would be way higher, measure th height of the rear axle, and the thickness of the leaf pack for example rear axle is 3" from bottom to top and leaf pack is 1.5", you would get a 4.5" lift from a spring over, and the ball joint spacer is a 1 or 1.5" spacer.  they also make lift spindles for 2wd yotas.

actually, 2wd lift spindles for the were discontinued, but you might be able to find remaining stock. i also had a set of fabtech spindles on mine.... here is an idea though, if you really want a badass 2wd... total chaos, its serious $, but can't be beat in terms of performance
