Rebuilt Manual Transmission install
« on: Nov 02, 2008, 03:43:40 PM »
Hi,

I am trying to stick in my new rebuilt MC transmission, but I can't get the old transmission out.
Had a friend help and wrestle the gear box and it is not moving backwards (all bolts are out). Took the TC off as well to make it lighter
It's a 1991 V6 pickup.
Any ideas?

Cheers,

Michael

your missing bolts. they are hard to find teh first few go arounds.

there are 4 bolts that hold it on and face backwards, as in the heads are pointed towards the front of the truck, threading rearward. two are on the starter, the other two are in the same place on the other side of the tranny

i assure you that if all bolts are removed, it should all but fall out of the truck

Are you sure all the bolts are out?

Also sometimes the alignment pins are a bit sticky.

If the bolts are out, push it sideways and you should get a little gap between tranny and engine.

Stick screwdriver in gap and move it sideways the otherway.

You could also try a come-along, either by itself or with the screwdrivers....

Continue sticking bigger things in the gap and walk it off by moving it back and forth.

there is a gap around the tranny. I can fit a wrench in the gap at the bottom, but the gap is very small at the top.

yep - both sticks are out. Might be stuck on an alignment pin. I can wobble the whole thing, it's just not moving backwards.
-thanks

Just got it out!! Thanks a lot for the tips.
Used a come-along winch on the rear axle. Got the base out about an inch but the top was still touching. Sprayed some WD40 under tension, waited a couple of minutes and it popped off with the touch of a wrench. Sticky alignment pin, I'll check its not bent.
Now I can put in the new fly wheel, 1600ftlb clutch and tranny.

Thanks again,
Michael
