pitman arm removal
« on: Oct 19, 2008, 07:41:11 PM »
I am having trouble pulling my pitman arm off of the steering box.  I have tried several pulley pullers.  Is there some trick to it or do you HAVE to use a pitman arm puller?

put the puller on it, run it up snug/tight with a ratchet and then smack the arm of the puller next to the shaft with a BFH a couple times.  Do that until it comes off.

I'm leaving the puller on overnight with tension on it and I'll try and the bfh technique again tomorrow.  I sprayed wd40 on it would penetrating oil or something help?

I had to do the same thing to get mone off. the cut off wheel wroks great as long as you take your time and dont cut into the steering shaft.

I use a cheap small 3 jaw puller with a hose clamp around the arms to hold them onto the pitman arm... Crank it down as tight as I dare and hit the pitman arm like I hate it.  Never taken more than a couple swings and the arm is flying off the box.

Put the puller on tighten it up tight, hit bolt head with BFH, tighten again, hit with BFH repeat  until it comes off.

I have always used a pitman arm puller (cheap one from harbor freight) and an impact gun. comes right off with no hammer.

Sprayed it down with PB Blaster

Put the HF puller on it real tight

When I came out in the morning it was laying on the floor.

And... She's off!  A cheap 3 arm puller, wd40, hose clamp, and bfh did the trick.  Apparently there's more mud under the truck than I thought. It started raining down when the bfh session began.  Do I need to press the new one on some how or just crank down/torque the nut?

Crank and torque, clean up the splines on the selector shaft with a wire brush.

I know shes not cheap but this is the best puller ive owned. esp cause you dont have to worry about banging and messing up your steering box seals. Snap-on sells them

I ended up having to cut mine off too.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.
