auto transmission question please help.

alright i have a 85 4runner FI with an auto  :thumbdown: and overdrive. and i have to shift it my self. sometimes I dont have to though and it will shift itself. couldsomeone please help me or has someone had this same trouble? thank you.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level yet? What color is the fluid?

if the fluid stinks get it changed with a new filter

i know if the tranny cpu is bad or missing  it will have to be manually shifted

If the fluid level is correct, and it smells OK it could be shift solenoids. What you describe sounds like
"sluggish" solenoids. If so this is what you need.
