High Performance All Season Tires
« on: Oct 26, 2008, 12:15:53 PM »
Very soon I will need to replace the tires on my 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 and I want to get some All Season tires to better handle the rain and occasional snow.  Because the car has a limited-slip front differential it stinks on slick roads.  There are several choices that I'm intersted in, but the price varies greatly so it's difficult to make a choice.  The stock size is 215/45/18 but I'll probably go with a "plus 0" 225/40/18 that will give me a lot more tire options.  Here's the list of ones I'm most intersted in:

(1) Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus $222 - New tire out on Sept 1 with a 45k tread warranty
(2) Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position $161 - top rated in class with a 40k warranty
(3) Goodyear Eagle GT $122
(4) Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season $147

I want a tire with good performance, good tread life (my OEM tires are going at around 30k) and minimal road noise.

Any thoughts?

I would agree except the Bridgestone is the top rated in class (the Michelin on the list should be better than the non-plus version that was rated 4th on tirerack.com but is too new to really know) and would cost $200 plus less.

Are you talking about the non-All Season Pilot or the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S?  There are several "pilots" on the market.

The one on the list has only been out a couple of months.  I would imagine that in California you deal with more people that drive the high end sports cars that the Michelins are designed specifically for as compared to the local Discount Tire that didn't even mention them?

Both BFG and Goodyear tires seems to wear out really fast and develop noise issues fairly quickly, but they do handle well and are inexpensive.
