Wire Q?'s for AFM and battery move
« on: Aug 18, 2008, 04:13:58 PM »
I'm moving my battery for the airbox move, I want to know if home service wire if large enough? :help: The wire saids 600V AWG 2 Oil and Gasoline Resistant and has 19 strands. Some other wire I have saids "6 type THW or MTW 600V" and has 7 strands. Then I have a battery wire from a donor car that is Al, I trust this one the most because it's for a battery.

And what wire can I use to re-wiring the airbox?

2 gauge is sufficient.  It came stock with like 4ga.  Where are you going to? other side of the truck or in the bed?

Sorry, no camera.
Battery is moving from the passenger side to the driver, onder the hood. I'm swapping the location of the airbox with the battery.

yeah 2gauge is plenty.  I assume you mean for the main battery cable, correct? you don't need anything that big for the fusebox feed...maybe 8ga to be safe.

Yeah, main battery cable and grounds. I will need to run a fuse box feed, but that's easier.

So I hear trailer tow wire works as extension for the airbox. Is there a 7 wire? and is the gauge large enough?

I wouldn't do that.  the AFM leads are what, 18ga? 7-way trailer cable is 6-12/1-10 (that is 6-12ga and 1-10ga) overkill.  solder in new wire of the same size as OEM, and heat shrink the connections.

Good question Duffil. 2 gauge is great for a lower resistance drop across a much longer distance, such as under the bed.

But keep in mind, you want to use a braid of wire with as many individual wires as possible to spread the current load which will result in less heat buildup and therefore less resistance.

If the 4 gauge wire you have has triple the number of individual wires than the 2 gauge wire you have, then I would use the 4 gauge wire.

But really, just moving to the other side of the engine compartment won't require too critical a discussion here.

Cool, I'll do that.

Bigmike, thanks for the tip and sorry, I erased your post by accident. The old positive lead was around 3ft, the new will be 6ft. This only goes from the + to the starter so I don't know how hot it will get but I would definitely like to get energy to the starter with as little loss as possible.

Okay, 1/2 done, I got the AFM all wired and working. And 16 gauge was way overkill, the wires were 20 gauge. I added 7ft to the harness, yeah, more that I needed. I soldered and heat shrink tubed all the connections, then tape wrapped the whole thing.

This is where a spare harness helps out.  I had spliced two coil wire leads together to make them longer and to reroute along the firewall instead over the head and exhaust.  Cleaned things up.
