87 turbo truck
« on: Jul 04, 2008, 09:23:55 AM »
I already have a w56 with dual marlin cases, but picked up an 87 turbo 4x4 truck yesterday for some parts (mostly the turbo stuff) but anyway is it worth it to swap my w56 for the r151f turbo trans and what would be involved? i know the r151f is a forward shift but could i keep my rear shift setup? or will stuff get moved around?

also i read somewhere the newer ifs steering boxes are closer ratio, is that correct? because it seems i have to turn my wheel like 10 times lock to lock and its sloppy as hell even with heim steering, would it be worth swaping this also? i think mine is out of an 85 2wd i was told...

also can someone tell me if i need to use the turbo wire harness, and exactly what is the difference between the re and R-te harness

anything else worth nabbing of of it?

Hmmmm You can keep your duals topshift and run the turbo trans, but your gonna have to get in there and change your front input over to 23 spline becouse the output on the turbo trans is 23 spline. You also gonna need to build a block off plate for where the forward shift tcase lever came through the trans tailhousing. I'm pretty shure there is a slight differance in length between the 2 tansmissions as well so your tcase shifters may come up in slightly different locations.

I'd like to know where you found the info about the different steering box ratios, couse I have one of each. If its true I might swap the one with the tighter ratio into my crawler.

The 2wd and 4wd steering boxes are different, and while its possible you do have a 2wd box on there they only mount with 2 bolts, and have a supposedly weaker internals. The 4wd ifs boxes use 3 mounting bolts and are the most comonly used for crossover steering.

I don't know anything about the rest of your questions. :dunno:

i have a 2wd steering box for sure then. I read about the ratios in one of the 4x4 mags about a year ago.

due to shifter spacing/ seats in my truck i decided to keep my w56, i have lots of parts from this truck for sale in the classifieds section!

I'm running a turbo harness in a non turbo 22re.  They are the same.

The FSM said there was supposed to be this turbo sensor blah, blah, blah, that I couldn't find!  I just have the turbo light in the dash, on all the time!

I completed the install. My motor is a 2.7 stroker with 9.3/1 compression with a rv262 crawler cam made by custom machine usa, the block and head are 22re non turbo components, as is the wiring harness. but the computer, injectors, and air flow meter are turbo units. the turbo unit is the TEC turbo upgrade. it runs well with the exception is im seeing 3+psi of boost at only part throttle and cruise. truck is approx 2500rpm at 65mph cruise. The turbo is beginning to spool at 1200rpm and is already at 2psi by 1400rpm, peaking to 5.5psi by 2800. while this is nice the ecu has the truck at full ritch even under cruise. do you have any sugustions on what might fix this?  Or am i missing components?

Well...

Let me remind you the truck rasn great while under heavy throttle, 6.5psi max, no signs of detonation, only issue are high egt's

all my problems lie under light throttle/cruise/towing. gas mileage is crap as the truck is boosting 3+psi at 65mph, and is moving soo much air the computer has the truck at full rich. after first switching to a adjustable cam gear and retarding cam timing a full 10* it was better, moving power up droping about 25* of egt(they are still too high) it was better but still feels flat on the top. so switched cam for oe 22r-tec cam lost all kinds of bottom end compared to my other cam, had better topend power, but torque feels flat under load, still have too high egt (1100+* after turbo) under sustained boost or even slight light load.

so i think im done with this setup.

feeler for sale.

Custom machine USA 2.7L stroker complete engine. Less thank 5000 miles (valve cover to oil pan)- $4300 new--- $3500obo

TEC turbo upgrade kit, turbo has very little to no shaft play, spins freely, and spools fast, comes with oil drain, braided oil feed line, 3"dp, adjustable waste gate. ---600obo

have lots of other parts too, including a rebuilt 22r-tec head, complete low milege rebuilt 22ret block, (but block is cracked) and varoius odds and ends, see my add in the classifieds.

Looks like i will be swapping for a v6, either toyota or chevy, i have a freaking library boo\k to read to make both smog legal and i will.

btw-the 2.7L motor passed CA smog with a tweaked afm, and 240cc/min injectors, and custom cam. before the turbo
